he Frankfurt Book Fair is the worlds most important book and multimedia publishing show. In 1997 nearly 10000 exhibitors took place in the event. Some two-third of the worlds annual turnover in the publishing business is contracted at the Frankfurt Book Fair. Since 1986 every year brought new countries as guests of honour to the focus of attention in Frankfurt: India (1986), Italy (1988), France (1989), Japan (1990), Spain(1991), Mexico (1992), The Netherlands and Flanders (1993), Brazil (1994), Austria (1995), Ireland (1996), Portugal (1997) and Switzerland (at the 50th Book Fair in 1998). 1999 is Hungarys year. Our country is the first guest of honour from Central and Eastern Europe in Frankfurt. The pavilion of the VIP-country is located at the central part of the fair and attracts a daily audience of 12-15.000 visitors. The Hungarian pavilion of the 1999 Frankfurt Book Fair will offer attractions on 1800 square metres at the very heart of the Fair replacing the old Press Centre in Frankfurt.
