The Hungarian Publishers’ and Booksellers’ Association (MKKE) is one of Europe’s oldest professional organisations. The one hundred voluntary member firms of this professional and interest protection federation, which operates on market principles, publish and distribute some 80 percent of Hungary’s total book market output. The MKKE is a member of the International Publishers’ Association, and since 1996, the International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organisations. The Association organises presentations abroad for the Hungarian book trade, as well as a number of domestic book events, among them the Budapest International Book Festival in April, in conjunction with the Frankfurt International Fair. It publishes a list of available books in Hungary entitled Books in Print. Aided by experts from abroad, the MKKE organises advanced training programmes, seminars and workshops for the management and staff of domestic firms. In addition, it subsidises supplies of books to ethnic Hungarian-populated territories abroad.
