The National Cultural Fund of Hungary is a sector-independent grant-making agency, a quasi-nongovernmental organisation or „quango”. It has a Steering Committee and fourteen permanent Review Panels (Motion Picture, Literature/Books, Periodicals, Theatres, Music, Dance, Fine Arts, Applied Arts, Photography, Folk Arts, Adult Education, Libraries, Archieves, Museums). One of them is Literature and Books Panel, one that spent about 2.8 million DM in1998. It has a Library Panel as well — the two of them together spent more than 15 per cent of all the Fund on books, reading, and literature, not to take into consideration strictly professional books subsidised by the other panels, like music, art and photography books. A new, special project on the Fund is the „Digital Academy” Program. The Literature Panel of the Fund (through the Centre for Contemporary Literature) has bought the Hungarian digital rights of the 39 most prominent Hungarian contemporary writers and poets, pays them a monthly fee, and is making the old and new works of the Immortals public domain, and accessible for the SchoolNet database through the Internet.
