- This bilingual book presents a selection of what the Hungarian editors consider to be the hundred or so loveliest poems in the language, rendered into appropriate English verse by a range of well-known British and American poets, including Ted Hughes, Edwin Morgan, Frederick Turner, Clive Wilmer and George Szirtes, the last named having undertaken the majority of new translations. The aim of these translations has been neither the wholesale adaptation of the originals to the idiom of contemporary English language free verse, nor the slavish reproduction of original sound patterns for reproduction’s sake (the business of the reproduction antique dealer) but the creation of faithfully and formally matched poems with their own life in English to produce poems that may be read convincingly across the languages and epochs with real pleasure.
