CYCLE OF IMPORTANT EVENTS OF HUNGARIAN BOOK PUBLISHING AND TRADE

ungarian publishers and retailers invite foreign exhibitors to their programmes throughout the year and at the same time they introduce themselves on occasions similar to those. It was therefore already the sixth time that the International Book Fair of Budapest was held between the 20th and the 23rd of April, 1999. The majority of Hungarian publishers and retailers exhibit on the Book Festival besides foreign publishers from more than 25 countries of the world. German publishers hire approximately 10 percent of the stands. Despite the fact that the Book Festival of Budapest is an exhibition and a fair, the emphasis is on bringing publishers and retailers together, that means on vivid debates and communication.

During the Week of Books publishers around the country - in 40 to 50 towns - organise events in relation to the themes of the books. The majority of publishers appear with their new products on this occasion. The programme itself is not aimed at the professional audience: it turns towards the wider public. According to the calculation of publishers, the sales of books during the Week of Books reached 1 billion HUF (ca. 78 million DEM). The Week of Books is held each year in the beginning of June.

The Exhibition of Scientific-, Professional- and Textbooks which - this year for the sixth time - will be held at the Technical University of Budapest between the 3rd and the 5th of November 1999, is rather aimed at the professional audience. Approximately 70 publishers will participate on the exhibition. These firms, this year, were granted altogether 400 million HUF (33 million DEM) of funds by the Foundation for Higher Education. Students and university scholars will have the possibility to buy books at discounts during the exhibition.

One of the most important events of the Hungarian book market is the Winter Book Fair. Many publishers appear with their more demanding and more expensive publications in the period before Christmas. According to past experiences, publishers and retailers gather a third of their annual turnover in the last two months of the year.
