Although in the early 1950s the Hungarian Writers’ Union operated under the influence of the Communist Party, by 1953 it had become an important forum for opposition thinking, and in 1956 became the intellectual precursor of the Hungarian uprising. In 1957, following the crushing of the uprising, it was broken up, only to be reformed in 1959. During the 1980s it once again became a forum for independent opposition ideas, and has since operated within the literary world as an organisation for the protection of writers’ and other literary interests. It plays an important role in the nation’s cultural diplomacy, helping to form contacts for Hungarian culture abroad. Its membership number is about 1,100.
