Apart from the music accompanied public readings and minor musical programmes in the area of the Book Fair and inside the Hall of Hungary (3.0) there are 9 sites where altogether 10 concerts will take place performed by the most prominent representatives of Hungarian classical music. The programme series include a solo concert (Zoltán Kocsis), chamber music concerts (UMZE Chamber Orchestra, Festetics String Quartet) and symphonic orchestral concerts (the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra). Romantic pieces and contemporary works are equally represented in the offer. There will also be vocal and church music (Tomkins Chorus) to delight the audience. Within the area of the Book Fair - primarily in the Hall of Hungary (3.0) and at weekend - apart from the above there will be jazz bands, light music formations, folk groups to put a gloss on the programme. Those performing here are: the ESP Group and László Dés, Budepest, Saxofon Quartet, Tükrös Együttes. In these programmes not only the works of classics of Hungarian music will be heard, but also those of the (internationally) lesser-known composers. Apart from the already famous Hungarian musicians young artists will also be given a possibility to introduce themselves to a bigger audience. It is of special interest that the ENSEMBLE MODERN, a world famous formation for contemporary music composed of international musicians has arranged a programme from the works of Hungarian composers and in honour of the seeded guests of the Book Fair. They will perform it on 14th October in the Mozart Saal. The concert of the UMZE Chamber Orchestra directed by Péter Eötvös's will also be introducing contemporary Hungarian composers on 4th October. One of the highlights of the music programmes will be the concert of the National Philharmonic Orchestra in the great hall of the Alte Oper selecting from the works of Ligeti and Liszt on 13th October. The curiosity of the concert is that the orchestra will be conducted by chief musical director and world-famous pianist Zoltán Kocsis, while the piano solo will be played by a contemporary of his, Dezső Ránki. A literary aspect of the concert is that with respect to the Goethe anniversary Liszt's Faust-symphony will also be performed. Apart from the concert it will be possible to get further information concerning Hungarian music, as well as the music programmes of the "Budapest Festival City" in the Hall of Hungary (3.0). Hungarian folk music is represented by the Muzsikás Group who now possess the illustrious Kossuth Prize, and will get on stage in Frankfurt and Stuttgart introducing their CD entitled BARTÓK-ALBUM, which they have already performed with great success all over the world. In this concert illustrating the relation and interaction of authentic folk music and Bartók's most well-known violin duos Grammy Prize winner Hungarian singer Márta Sebestyén and Romanian violin virtuoso Alexander Balanescu will also get on stage.

PÉTER EÖTVÖS INTRODUCING HUNGARIAN CHAMBER MUSIC The ensemble came to existence in 1997, it gave its first concert in course of the Budapest Autumn Festival. It was brought to existence and its activity was given a theoretical and practical basis by Zoltán Rácz (artistic leader of the Amadinda Percussion Group) and András Wilheim (music historian). It proudly holds the heritage of the New Hungarian Music Ensemble (Új Magyar Zeneegyesület) founded in 1911, since the late UMZE bearing the stamp of genius of Bartók and Kodály was one of the most progressive initiatives in twentieth-century Hungarian musical life. The new UMZE Chamber Orchestra aims to introduce the major works of the twentieth century. In order to give a new insight into modern compositions they occasionally place contemporary works into the context of the great works of the past. Idea and organisation: Frankfurt '99 Non-profit

MUZSIKÁS GROUP:
BARTÓK ALBUM Contributing: MUZSIKÁS GROUP: BARTÓK ALBUM The programme of the Muzsikás Group illustrates the close relationship between the work of Béla Bartók and folk music, while also searching for the answer to the question of what attracted Béla Bartók folk music. The melodies of the record were almost all collected and put down by Bartók, and some of them he used in his own works. There will be three violin duos performed by Mihály Sipos and Alexander Balanescu, a violin virtuoso born in Romania and living now in England. The members of the Muzsikás Group, who, like Bartók, also went to the countryside to collect folk music, and learn the artifice of music playing from the local musicians, the "muzsikás-ok", wish to pay their respect to folk art and Bartók with this programme. The world premier concert of the Bartók Album of the Muzsikás Group was held in London on 15th November 1998, in the famous Royal Festival Hall. Its homeland premier was in course of the Budapest Spring Festival on 22nd March in the great hall of the Music Academy of Budapest. The record comes out in Hungary in the edition of the Muzsikás Group, its world wide edition is in the hands of the English-American firm Rykodisc. The concerts will take place with the kind co-operation of the Bertold Seliger Concert Agency. Idea and organisation: Frankfurt '99 Non-profit
