Széphalom publishing house was founded by the Writers’ Union. It was set up chiefly in order to publish works of contemporary Hungarian literature, but over the years has also produced numerous sociographical, political, historical, cultural, philosophical, youth and children’s publications. Among its published authors can be found representatives of almost every tendency and generation of contemporary Hungarian literature. Special attention is devoted to the publishing of the emerging generation of authors. Since 1988, Széphalom has produced a striking and important publication entitled the Yearbook of Hungarian Literature, which publicises the events and institutions of Hungarian literary life, and regularly includes a list of authors living both in Hungary and abroad, with data checked and updated yearly. Published authors include Nándor Várkonyi, Anna Jókai, and from the younger generation, László Krasznahorkai.
