    • This is a unique collection: throughout Europe, we do not know more than 15-20 specimen of Jesuit stage design, while the Hungarian Theatre Museum and Institute’s collection alone contains an incredible number of 115 items. These Baroque stage designs bear unmatched testimony to Jesuit educational accomplishments. From 1619 up to the dissolution of the order in 1773, the Jesuits regularly staged theatrical performances, initially in Latin and later in Hungarian, German and Slovakian. These performances boasted spectacular scenography, as shown by the stage designs. The allegorical figures in the drawings refer to the subjects and themes of the Baroque theatre performances. Thus, these decorations are authentic documents of contemporary artistic, cultural and theatrical history. Publishing a facsimile edition of the collection, accompanied by an introductory study by Professor Marcello Fagiolo and detailed captions in Hungarian and English present subtle impressions of Baroque fine art and bear powerful testimony to the role of the Jesuit colleges in the development of education and drama in Hungary and Europe.

    • The comprehensive history of 20th century Hungarian art written by four eminent museologists and art historicans provides a chronological survey of modern art in Hungary from the School of Nagybánya and the School of Rome through socialist realism and concept art, including the latest developments. The story of 20th century Hungarian art begins in 1896, the year of the brilliant Millennial festivities that saw the opposition between the academic and modernist viewpoints break into open. Alongside historicism, the art of the Secession flourished, and a handful of young artists set out for Nagybánya, the first waystation of modern Hungarian painting. The story continues with the avant-garde movements, the Group of Eight and the Activists - the official modernism of the School of Rome, the post-impressionist Gresham Circle during the interwar period - 1945 and its aftermath, the fifties and Seventies - the political turnabout of 1989, and contemporary post-modern art. In addition to being a comprehensive survey of this century’s Hungarian art, this volume is the first to provide an account of the period from 1945 to our days, an account that is an independent, professional re-evaluation of the past fifty years, free of political pressures and censorship as well as of the various strategies formerly employed to evade them. The authors also use new viewpoints to examine this period, and they have made every effort to introduce the constantly evolving context and institutions of recent art - exhibitions, galleries, periodicals - as well as works by the youngest artists.

    • Imre Amos (1907-1944) modern Jewish painter could have been called the Hungarian Chagall (he had met Chagall in 1937, who set a high value on his art). He was taken to forced labour camp during the second world war, where he contiously drew the people and the subjects surrounding him. These are sketches of paintings that have never been realized - an invaluably original document in the Hungarian history of culture describing the depth of the Holocaust. The original copy - that we have come across accidently - gave an incomparably deeper experience than the reproductions of the pages. The faded checked ring binder with its notes, marks and stains evoked another tradition in publishing: the Haggadah printings. In such editions the pages are most closely reproduced together with stains, notes and transparencies through which the uniqueness of the work and its fate are also reflected and documented in the reproduction. Our edition follows this particular publishing practise. We consider Amos’s work a great and unique art document wich fully deserves the attention. The ring binder book was reproduced as perfectly as possible. An essay, the Haggaddah of the Apocalypse (written by Kôbányai János - around 60 pages, richly illustrated with photos, drawings, paintings, original documents, the cover is designed in the style of the notebook) is accompanied by the faximile notebook, explaining the Hungarian historical period when the drawings were created. The edition came out for the Jerusalem International Book Fair - we felt that this is the most appropriate venue for this book. The English version is translated by John Batky, one of the most professional and well-known translators of Hungarian literature.

    • Turn-of-the-century art was unique in bearing the marks of both centuries: traditional genres and motifs could still be discerned, whether in technical, thematic, or functional terms; yet the mixing or amalgamation of genres was evident as well. Meanwhile questions of genre emerged apart from representational art, questions that sought legitimacy for the visualization of new worlds.     • "These two dates (1966, 1997) mark the time of the ’birth’ of the first and last pictures in this album. During these thirty-one years and my visits to Transylvania, I was lucky to find villages where I found traditional peasant culture almost untouched, and where I could witness the gradual tranformation that would profoundly and inevitably change the countenance of this region.I went to those Hungarian and Romanian villages where much of the old peasant way of life the customs, the peasant garbs, the music, the dance could be found till the late eighties, perhaps longer than anywhere else in Europe. And along with tradition, the binding force that gave communities their cohesions was very much in evidence as well. This work is not a documentary, nor a collection of carefully selected examples of the photographer’s art. It is a series of pictures out of Transylvania which hold special significance for me and which I felt should be shared with others.

    • Today any approach to Bartók’s music is highly supported by Lendvai’s theoretical analyses. His concept can be characterized by the liberation from one definite tonality, postulating in every moment the total presence and interdependence of the encompassing tonal system. He opened new doors to a multidimensional analysis in the field of music that makes possible an integrated interpretation of a wide spectrum of European music. Moreover, he highlighted basic differences between Western and Eastern music, thus providing our musical culture with a more comprehensive understanding. As a translation of the entire first volume of the new Complete Hungarian Lendvai-Edition, this book is intended for the English speaking reader. It presents - for the first time in English - the very first discoveries of the author, which were finalized in 1947, but, however, first published only in 1955. Maybe the today’s reader will smile at the many exclamation marks, or even double exclamation marks: however, they can be regarded as something touching, as a proof or outburst of the enthusiastic joy of discovery.

    • László Sáry is one of the most appreciated composers of Hungarian contemporary music. His book introduces an entirely new method of music pedagogy as a result of a long practical and theoretical work both as a teacher and a musician of New Music Studio.     • Initiated and commissioned by Zoltán Kodály, the first Hungarian music research in the original habitat of the Hungarians, a territory bounded by the rivers Volga, Kama and Belaya, began in 1957 and ended in 1979. All scientific disciplines register the Hungarians as - turkified - Finno-Ugrians. For this reason it is imperative for us to investigate both origins. Researchers have long been devoted signal attention to the similarities, or differences in the languages, and songs of the neighbouring Turkic and Finno-Ugrian peoples. Besides the previously published Cheremis, Chuvash and Votyak volumes, the Tatar Folksongs continues these former Volga-Kama musical monographies, but in actual fact, it is more : as the outcome of an extensive areal research of a decade, it is a self-contained entity. Those, who read only this volume, without the precedents, will also get useful musical and linguistic information. The fourth and last volume of the series contains 460 Tatar folksongs, including their detailed analyses, a short summary of the Tatar history and language, the English and Hungarian translation of the song-texts, notes, different musical indexes, bibliography, map and 20 original photographs.

    • Collecting postcards was a favoured pastime as early as the turn of the century. The most significant Hungarian Jewish postcard collection is that of Vilmos Kohn. The four albums have been kept in the Hungarian Jewish Museum. The collection comprises cards of all the prominent publishing houses in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The collection dates back to the turn of the century and continues up to the 1920s. Its more than 1,500 items provide us with a fair range of cards used by Jewish people in the Monarchy. The cards fall in four categories according to their subject matter: Palestine at the turn of the century - cards in the style of Art Nouveau - cards depicting scenes from the Bible and, finally - a series of cards portraying the most honoured rabbis. This large and varied collection of cards served as basis for our selection which presents the City and the famous sites of Jerusalem and also provides us with images of old Palestine.
